Cognitive Assessments

A cognitive assessment is used to determine a child's general thinking and reasoning abilities, which is also known as their intellectual functioning or IQ. An assessment explores their performance across different areas including memory, verbal comprehension and processing speed, and can help obtain a profile of their specific strengths as well as any challenges they face. Assessment also includes a parent consultation to explore the child's adaptive behaviour (that is, their daily functioning in areas such as self-care, communication, motor skills and socialisation). All of this information contributes to the overall report which can help establish if a child is, for example, presenting with an intellectual disability and may need additional supports.

These assessment are also used to establish if a child is intellectually gifted; reports can be used in support of an application to the Centre for Talented Youth as well as provided to schools as a means of helping all involved understand their specific needs.
